Friends of Junior Bridge
On Sunday, October 9 HHJB will sponsor a Swiss Teams Club Championship game click on circle of friends at the HHI Bridge Club in support of junior bridge programs.

HHJB will conduct a new program of junior bridge classes and games 10:00 to 12:00 noon Saturdays from September 10 to December 17, 2011. Classes are fun and informative where students each week learn a little and play a lot. On the last Saturday of each month HHJB will conduct a mini-tournament to get players accustom to playing in competitive game situations.

HHJB will be running a program of mini-lessons and supervised play Saturdays mornings throughout the summer (June 4 through August 27). If you have grandchildren visiting this summer (age 8-14), bring them by the bridge club 10:00 am to 12:00 noon each Saturday morning .

On Saturday we ran a mini-tournament with 4 tables in play and some players substituting because of other Saturday morning activities (soccer, etc.). The game was won by Jillian Kender & Anna Schidrich with an outstanding 73.7% game … WOW … great work Jillian and Anna Anna.
Austin Barrella & Thomas Kender came in second with a 63.6% game and Parker Kenyon & Miyah Shatz came in third with a 59.0% game. The results for the game are posted on the HHI Bridge Club website. click here Congratulations to everyone for playing a complex one-winner Howell movement.

For Students Raised on iPods, Lessons in Bridge

Though chess is still the game of choice among educators, bridge is catching on at a growing number of schools across the nation for its social benefits for youths.
This last week was a special week for HHJB. It was just over a year ago we (Ron & Fred) started teaching/playing bridge with our two 8 year old grandsons (Aden & Alijah) on Saturday mornings in the HHI Bridge Club.
From the beginning our concept has been that the kids learn by playing i.e., they get their hands on cards and have fun. We don’t teach a lot of conventions, but focus on how to play the cards.
This last week Alijah turned 9 and to celebrate we played in the Wednesday night open pairs game at the club. We had a 40% game, and had a lot of fun. The significance of this event is that in one year we have taken 8 year olds from the point of learning the game to being able to play in an open pairs duplicate game with adults without slowing down the play of the game or keeping others from enjoying the game.
Starting in September of 2011 HHJB hopes to run a junior pairs game most Saturdays at the HHI Bridge Club from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Thanks goes to the HHI Bridge Club, we could never have developed this program without the support of the board and members of the club.
Hilton Head Junior Bridge would like to sponsor/support additional youth bridge programs in conjunction with area schools, churches and/or community organizations. We need YOUR help developing these school/community programs.
The American Contract Bridge League School Bridge Lesson Series program offers a stipend ($350) and textbooks for school bridge program. (See the ACBL website for full details.) In addition, Hilton Head Junior Bridge will pay an additional stipend (of at least $150) for ACBL qualified classes.
